Middle schoolers competing with calculators

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) – Middle schoolers battled it out with their calculators on Saturday at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.

It was the annual Math Counts competition and is organized by the Society for Professional Engineers. The competition is for students who take a series of mathematics tests throughout the day.

Officials say these students are the future engineers of their generation.

“It’s the stem. Mathematics is everything,” said Elton Graves, coordinator. “If you’re going to be in science or engineering, you have to do the math. And these kids like it!”

The top two teams will go to the state competition which will also at RHIT on March 15.

Results from the competition are as follow:

First Place: Honey Creek Middle School
Second Place: Terre Haute Christian Home Education
Third Place: Otter Creek Middle School
Fourth Place: Woodrow Wilson Middle School
Fifth Place: Sarah Scott Middle School
Sixth Place: West Vigo Middle School
