Firefighters battled fire for more than 4 hours

RILEY, Ind. (WTHI) – Just after 2 a.m. on Saturday, the Riley Fire Department responded to a residence fire on Red Bud Lane in Timberlake’s Subdivision near State Road 46 and Lama Street North.

When officials arrived on scene the homeowners, Matthew and Megan Higginbotham, advised they found smoke inside the home when they arrived home after being away for several hours.

Firefighters found the fire had started on the first floor but then spread to the second floor and the attic space. It appeared the fire had been burning for some time.

The quick spread of the fire throughout the home can be contributed to the fact that it was under construction at the time.

Due to the below freezing temperature at -6 degrees, water supply was an issue due to frozen equipment.

Officials are saying the home is a total loss. The cause of the fire will likely remain undetermined due to the extensive damage.

Firefighters were on the scene for over four hours.

The Higginbotham family was provided shelter by the American Red Cross and no injuries were reported.
