Sports and convention district in Terre Haute

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) – Local lawmakers sponsored a bill that would establish a ‘sports and convention district’ in Terre Haute.

Sales taxes generated within the district would be kept local to make bond payments for major projects.

“Most communities our size have about 66,000 square feet available to the public to use,” said Mayor Duke Bennett. “Terre haute has less than 6000.  So we really don’t have any.”>

Other Indiana cities with these districts include Fort Wayne, South Bend, Evansville, and Indianapolis. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
