What do you make time to do?

Jaclyn Bevis

Do you have an extra seven hours in your week?

It may seem like a basic question, but after some thought, I’ve found the answer to be a little more thought provoking.

If you would have asked me at the beginning of the year, I’d have said “no way” in no uncertain terms. When people asked questions like “How have you been?” and “What have you been up to?” I gave quick answers about how busy and crazy my schedule was at the time.

At this moment, we’re 56 days into 2014. In just 56 days, I’ve found an extra hour in almost every day. No, I haven’t found a magical place with 25 hours in a day. (Although, I WOULD appreciate that if that world existed.) This is all thanks to my Triathlon training as I prepare for the Terre Haute Triathlon in May. (You still have time to join me!)

I work in a world that counts seconds. Each newscast we do is timed down to the second. Thirty seconds may not sound like much, but if you stare at a blank screen on television for that long, many of you (and even I) would think something was broken. For that reason, the thought of spending an hour in a pool, on a bike, or on a treadmill seemed like an eternity. The thought of finding an extra hour in my day seemed impossible.

What I’ve found is this: You make time for things that are important to you. My triathlon training has become an important thing for me in just a few short weeks. What can you make time for this week?

On a lighter note, let’s talk about how I pass the time. You all know my affinity toward swimming, so when I’m in the pool, I’m pretty focused on breathing. I can’t really multi-task in that one. Luckily, I usually bike with the team. Because of the weather, we’ve been inside, so we usually watch a movie (or two on the long rides). When I’m running, I must listen to music, regardless of how my coach, Ryan Oilar, feels about it. (Please share suggestions. What do you listen to when you’re working out? I’m starting to repeat a few too many.)

I have fewer pictures to share this time around, but I’ll work on getting more and maybe even a video to go along with it all. I do, however, have a special surprise. Join Kevin Orpurt and me Wednesday on News 10 First at Five when I share.
