Icy roads in S. Indiana make driving hazardous

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — A winter storm has left behind nearly 9 inches of snow near Lake Michigan and a coating of ice in southwestern Indiana but conditions appear to be improving.

Sgt. Todd Ringle of the Indiana State Police in Evansville says one lane of westbound Interstate 64 west of U.S. 41 has reopened a semitrailer rollover closed both lanes for about 30 minutes Sunday morning. He says troopers continue to work slide-offs in the area but conditions appear to be improving.

The National Weather Service reports up to a half inch of sleet fell in that area and a quarter inch of ice was covering some surfaces at midmorning Sunday.

The weather service has cancelled a winter weather advisory for northern Indiana. It says 8.8 inches of snow fell near Portage.
