Vigo’s New Arson and Rescue Dog: Blaze

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) – Vigo County welcomed a new addition to the family who will serve the community… once he grows into his large paws.

Meet Blaze. He’s a 9 week old British Labrador. The Vigo County Council purchased Blaze with help from the Prosecutor’s office. Blaze and his handler Darrick Scott will be trained in arson detection as well as search and rescue.

“The dog and the handler train so much faster, because from puppyhood, you learn what their tales are, what makes him excited. It’s a distinct advantage having him from puppyhood and with the handler from the very beginning,” said Vigo County EMA Director Dr. Doreen Hojnicki.

Right now, Blaze is doing well in obedience school. He will head to Wisconsin for search and rescue training in June. He’ll begin arson training about a year from now.
