INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Indianapolis Metropolitan Police detectives have confirmed the identity of a suspect killed in a shootout with police Wednesday night.
27-year-old Andrew Sizemore of Indianapolis is believed to have lived at the house in the 1600 block of South State Avenue with other relatives.
Investigators say they found an undetermined amount of illegal narcotics and other criminal evidence inside the house.
Four IMPD SWAT officers were injured while serving a high risk narcotics search warrant at that address around 7:45 p.m.
Police say as they entered the house while announcing “police search warrant”, a male subject started firing his gun at officers from inside the house.
The officers immediately returned fire killing the suspect.
Two officers remained hospitalized overnight but were expected to be okay. One officer was treated and released. A fourth officer was treated at the scene and released.
IMPD Chief Rick Hite told reporters, “Today’s events should serve as a reminder of the everyday dangers law enforcement officers experience to bring stability and peace to our communities. The bravery of these officers, when faced with a deadly encounter, should be commended. IMPD remains committed to rooting out illegal drugs and violence in our communities and with continued information sharing and collaboration with our community we will continue to make our community safe.”
