All students in SW School Corp. to get iPad

SULLIVAN, Ind. (WTHI) – A local school corporation is making a major change in how students will learn next year.

Cell phones, tablets and computers – everywhere you look technology surrounds us. Southwest School Corporation Superintendent, Chris Stitzle, understands that technology also surrounds the world of education.

“I do think we need to expose our kids to the world their going to live in so they’re better prepared to be successful in that world and that’s ultimately the goal of this project,” Stitzle said.

By the time the 2014-2015 calendar school year rolls around, every single student in the Southwest School Corporation will have an iPad.

It is a part of their program called ‘One to One’, one iPad to every student. But the question is, how much will it cost and who will pay for it?

“So basically, our goal is to pay for the bulk of this through text book rental over a four year period,” Stitzle said. “So the book fees that the parents have had in the past for texts books, will no longer be that, it will be for the device.”

In other words, there will be no ‘hidden fees’ for parents. Plus, it’s a device that students in grades K through 12 will utilize at school and take home.

A project that has been in the works for two years but, Stitzle says this program is going to be a learning curve, not only for students but for teachers as well.

“I mean I see it as a four year process and my goal is hopefully we will develop a digital curriculum over that four year period with the teachers but its going to really take a lot of profession development,” he explained.

Ultimately, these iPads will help the Southwest School Corporation stay up to date with a technology savvy world and advance learning.

“I really think its going to excite the kids and when you get the kids excited then I think they’ll going to be excited about learning and that’s what we’re really in the business of doing…” explained Stitzle.

The Southwest School Corporation posted a video explainer on their website for parents to receive more details about the ‘One to One’ program.
