MARYVILLE, Tenn. (WISH) – The CBS affiliate in Maryville, Tenn. reports wreckage from a plane that took off from French Lick, Ind. has been located.
The Federal Aviation Administration said early Monday morning a small plane that took off from Indiana Sunday disappeared in a heavily wooded area near the North Carolina – Tennessee state line.
WVLT-TV reports the wreckage was found and will take a while to access.
The Blount County, Tenn. Sheriff’s Department told 24-Hour News 8 they received a call from the FAA around 10 p.m. that a Dehavilland DHC-1 aircraft may be missing in an area adjacent to Calderwood Lake. The two-seat vintage aircraft departed French Lick, Ind. with one person on board. The plane did not reach its intended destination in Canon, Ga.
Authorities say the plane was flying on visual flight rules and was not receiving air traffic control service. There was no immediate word on the identity of the pilot.
