Mayor Bennett takes part of ‘National Day of Service’

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) – Terre Haute’s Mayor spent part of his Tuesday in service to others.

Mayor Duke Bennett was one of several mayors in the nation who recognized national service organizations.

It’s part of AmeriCorps ‘National Day of Service.’

Bennett was an AmeriCorps member for the day spending part of his day helping out at the United Way’s mobile market.

He also stopped at the Booker T. Washington center to have lunch with kids taking part in a spring break camp.

“You can’t have these programs, events or camps without having volunteers,” Bennett said. “AmeriCorps kinda flies under the radar screen from a lot of people’s perspective.  They’ve heard of it, but they don’t know what they do in our community.

Indiana State University’s Community Engagement Office oversees an AmeriCorps chapter, which has more than 50 members helping 21 agencies.
