VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTHI) – World Autism Awareness Day, is a day aimed to increase awareness about people, especially children, with autism.
Wednesday, April 2nd Mayor Duke Bennett and several community members gathered for a balloon release at Deming Park for World Autism Awareness Day.
It’s a day Mayor Bennett says he’s been doing for 7-years.
“Looking back at my first years in office, the crowds and a group like this was much smaller. People would say, “Autism I’ve never heard of it and don’t know much about it.” I think as a community we’ve done a tremendous job,” said Bennett.
Recently Vigo County gained a one of a kind facility geared towards helping families with an autistic child.
The facility is called the Harsha Cognitive Center.
The program helps not only autistic children but also their parents, better their quality of life as a family.
The center opened in January and is currently accepting applications.
