TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) — After a recent arrest of a convicted sex offender at a local motel, many people went back to the Indiana statewide database to check the area near their home.
The Indiana Sex and Violent Offender Registry database offers information for where a sex offender lives, works, and even what they look like.
It’s updated by the local Sheriff’s Department on a regular basis, but the system does rely on self-reports from convicted offenders.
Each offender follows rules based on their sentence from a case. Many sex offenders are not allowed to live within 1,000-feet of a school, park, youth center or day care; however, that rule does not apply to all offenders. Some offenders are also grandfathered in to the law based on when they moved to their current residence.
If you’re traveling, many states offer a registry similar to the Indiana registry to check before you book a hotel.
