‘Drive slower, safer and smarter’ in construction zones

VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTHI) – Earlier this week Indiana Governor Mike Pence proclaimed this week ‘Work Zone Awareness’ week with the idea to raise awareness about worker safety in work zones.

And construction along Interstate 70 is already underway with this is the time of year when we see more work zones pop-up.

And more work zones mean more workers.

Those orange barrels and signs are there for a reason: To keep people safe. This year’s theme is ‘Work Zone Speeding: A Costly Mistake.’

Hoosiers can be fined up to $1,000 for speeding and up to $5,000 for recklessly driving through work zones.

Sgt. Joe Watts with the Indiana State Police stated the best advice when passing a work zone is to drive slower, safer and smarter.
