TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) Monday night’s Vigo County School Corporation board meeting gave the public a first look at the future of swimming in Terre Haute. It also moved the aquatic center one step closer to breaking ground.
“The new aquatic center will be coming in and opening up in the 2015-2016 school year,” Vigo County Superintedent of Schools Danny Tanoos said. “So (Monday night) we wanted to give a presentation just to update the public and the school board on where we’re at with the aquatic center.”
The presentation by the architect and construction team presented a first glimpse of the center complete with floor plans and computer generated renderings of the building; all part of the update for the school board.
“Right now this update will give the board where we’re at and we’re within budget which is very critical,” Tanoos said. “So we are looking at again, an Olympic sized pool, a therapy pool about 400 seats and this facility will be the premier aquatics center in this part of the state.”
As they get closer to a June groundbreaking. Monday night’s meeting also gave the school corporation the means to begin building by selling $9.8 million in bonds.
“Upon passage, the next thing we will do is advertise for our notice of intent to sell bonds and hopefully that will occur then at the end of May or beginning of June,” Donna Wilson Chief Financial Officer for Vigo Schools said.
