INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly is getting even bigger. About 1 a.m. Tuesday morning the company announced it is buying Novartis Animal Health for $5.4 billion dollars.
The animal health company makes medicines for animals including heart worm and flea control for cats and dogs. Novartis will become a part of Elanco which is the animal health division of Lilly.
According to Lilly the deal will create the second largest animal health company in the world.
Eli Lilly has 38,000 employees world-wide. More than 10,000 of those are in Indianapolis.
“Animal health continues to represent an attractive growth opportunity for Lilly,” Lilly’s chairman, president and CEO John C. Lechleiter said.
