TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) – With more and more of you shopping online, that means more and more packages are being sent by FedEx, shipped by UPS or by U.S. Mail.
A News 10 viewer wrote to us after she had two packages stolen right from her own front door. But that’s just the beginning of her story. It’s a disturbing trend and the Terre Haute Police Department report they’re seeing it.
The viewer who wrote us said not only did thieves take her packages; she claims thieves are following delivery drivers and striking once they are out of eye shot.
The viewer told us the UPS was the delivery service who brought the packages to her home. We approached UPS for comment. A spokeswoman said they’ve noticed no rash of thefts in Terre Haute, but they do happen from time to time, especially around the holidays. UPS trains their drivers to be observant of this growing trend and report suspicious activity.
THPD stated people need to follow some simple tips to protect themselves. “The best advice we can give is for people to utilize some of the online services now. A lot of them have tracking abilities, and some of them even allow to have an email sent to you, notifying you when the package has been delivered,” said Assistant Chief, Shawn Keen of THPD.
Police also recommend that you report any suspicious activity in your neighborhood. UPS also passed along some of the services they provide that Assistant Chief Keen spoke of. We’ve linked you here.
