FOUNTAIN COUNTY, Ind. (AP/WISH) — State police said a semi-truck hit a bridge support just north of Hillsboro, about 15 miles west of Crawfordsville, closing Interstate 74 in both directions in western Indiana for hours on Friday.

Police said the crash killed the semi driver, Dale C. Johnstone Jr., 42, of Canton, Ohio.

Indiana State Police said Johnstone was driving eastbound on on I-74 near the 21.5 mile marker when he left the roadway for an unknown reason. Johnstone hit the bridge support to SR 341.

Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) bridge inspectors were called to the scene and have deemed the bridge safe for travel.

The semi was carrying cat food, which spilled across the east and westbound lanes Friday night. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
