TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) – The focus of an event on Tuesday in Terre Haute was helping seniors stay away from scams.

Senior Education Ministries used the theme ‘Scams Ahoy’ to get the word out about scams that target older people.

Indiana’s Secretary of State, Connie Lawson, was one of many presenters.

The scams presentation is an annual event, but Senior Education Ministries can help year-round.

Officials say its important to make sure seniors are not taken advantage of.

“People over 60 equal about 30 percent of victims in security scam and so these fraudsters know that seniors have worked their entire life to build up a nest egg,” Lawson said.

This is the 8th year Senior Education Ministries has held this event. Next year’s theme will be “Seniors in Scamland”.
