Dog owners support Bark Park in TH

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) – We’ve received lots of feed back concerning Tuesday’s story that a bark park is coming to Terre Haute.  The city had been talking about a bark park for years.

So what took it so long?

John Krasich and his dog really enjoy living at the Heritage Trail Apartments on Terre Haute’s east side.  When John’s not going to class at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology or pitching for the Engineer baseball team, he’s walking his dog along the trail.

He also likes to take her to the dog park at Heritage Trail.

“I take my dog there a lot and she likes to run and play with the other dogs,” John told us.

John’s dog has a lot of energy to burn, so that’s why he says the bark park is perfect for them.  The problem is right now it’s the only bark park in the city.

But that will soon change as the city will build its first bark park in Fairbanks Park.  It’ll be ready by the fall, and john says he can’t wait.

“I’ll probably take her to both just because you get to meet the same kinds of dogs here, especially at an apartment complex.  But if you have it open to the public, then you get to meet different types of people and dogs,” said John.

We caught up with the Cockrell’s walking their dog, Sandy, in Deming Park.  They, too, think a bark park is a great idea.

“We do have a lot of pet owners here in Terre Haute, and they are very interested in having a place for their dog to run and have fun,” said Timothy Cockrell of Terre Haute.

Pat Martin headed up this project for the city.  He says this project took about 5 years to become a reality.  The city is leasing 1.1 acres of land from Vectren and is a former manufacturing site.  It’s a Brownfield site, so it needs cleaned up.  Martin says all parties had to work together to meet the criteria for this park to become a reality.

“I can’t give enough credit to the Indiana Brownfield Program and to Vectren for being willing to go along with an idea like this,” said Martin.

Construction begins late next month, meaning John and his dog are just a few months away from having a new place to play ball.

The city is asking for the public’s help in funding dog toys for the bark park.  If you’re interested in donating to the project, contact the Terre Haute Parks and Recreation Department. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
