Wampler and Fitzgerald taken in the MLB draft

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) – You can add Tyler Wampler to the impressive list of Wabash Valley players taken in the Major League Baseball draft.

Saturday afternoon the Los Angeles Dodgers took Wampler in the 17th round, the 519th overall pick.

Then the Sycamores were represented again when Mike Fitzgerald went in the 27th round to the Padres.

Wampler was a key starter on West Vigo’s 2009 Class 3-A State Runner-up team.

He was a four-year starter at ISU.

Wampler said five to six teams had shown interest in him leading up to the draft, including the Dodgers.

The former West Vigo and ISU star is one of the top defensive shortstops in the nation. This season he became the first Sycamore to win the MVC Defensive Player of the Year.

“It’s really hard to describe I mean to be able to have my family around at the time I mean I just had butterflies,” Wampler described. “It’s an amazing feeling and it’s a dream come true.”
