TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) – “We’ve all been playing music collectively as kids to adults now…”

It’s the first stop for In the Spotlight and we are meeting up with The Nerve – a band from Terre Haute who has been playing together for years.

“We were doing one hundred percent originals since we were kids, me and Tony,” explained Ben Christjansen, lead singer for The Verve.

“We played all together through high school – The Nerve. We do a lot of covers but we’ve been working on originals,” said Tony Benefiel, guitarist.

It was working towards original music that helped bring together the current line up.

“I have a home studio so I met these guys through recording my brother’s band – which they were a part of and they had an opening so I jumped on it,” stated Tony.

“There were two different bands – Anamous Image, that was with Ben and Tony,” described Paul Neice, drummer. “Jack was in, well they had like fifteen different names. The other bands broke up and we meshed together on this one.”

“I’ve actually been kicked out of this band once,” laughed Jack Callahan, guitarist. “They brought me back so it’s been back and forth. Back and forth.”

It was during that back and forth that a final member was needed: A bass player.

“Looking for a bass player, couldn’t find a bass player,” stated Ben. “We got my brother Jon to play and he kind of stuck with us.”

“We’ve got a lot of history even though I haven’t been playing with them. I used to haul their gear to Indianapolis,” said Jon Christjansen, bass player. “I was kind of their roadie for a while.”

While helping out his brother’s band, Jon found himself not only becoming a fan of the music, but also learning the songs.

“I started playing music a little bit. It started with congas and progressed to playing bass a little bit in another band that I had,” he explained. “And then they needed a bass player. So I started playing bass… and knew their songs. I basically learned with this band.”

“Seeing him playing up on stage gave me a great feeling,” Jon described. “A feeling of satisfaction. Then being able to be a apart of it just brings out the love even more.”

In this band there may be brothers by birth but they are all brothers by song.

“We’ve got a group of guys that have great personalities that kind of complement each other. And that’s what you see before you,” said Ben. “And then that same relationship and cohesiveness you can see through the music as well.”
