INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – A local Iraq war veteran received a special surprise this Father’s Day.

Nick Bennett was critically injured in a rocket blast in 2004. After 26 surgeries and years of rehabilitation, he returned home to his kids in Franklin.

However, he says the effects of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) made him unable to be the father he wanted to be.

That was until he received a gift from Project 2 Heal.

Bennett got a new service dog named Festus, who is helping him every day, especially when it comes to his family.

“This is pretty cool. I may not have to tell my kids ‘no’ anymore when they want to get down to color or wait until Mom gets home. I know I can get back off the floor again,” Bennett said.

Project 2 Heal trains service service dogs to be placed in homes of the wounded and disabled.

Festus is the first service dog the organization placed in a former service member’s home.
