Early morning fire damages home


RILEY, Ind. (WTHI) – A home was heavily damaged by an early morning fire.

Just after 2 Tuesday morning, Riley Fire Department responded to a home located at 6325 State Road 159 just south of Riley. Crews found flames shooting from the side of the home.

The home is owned by Emory Counterman and was occupied by four adults at the time of the fire. Two of those adults were sleeping in the room where the fire started and were awakened by smoke.

There were no smoke detectors in the section of the home where the fire started but all residents escaped without injury.image

The Riley Fire Department believes the fire was an accident and they think it originated at or near a window air-conditioning unit.

Honey Creek, Seelyville, Sugar Creek Fire Departments along with the Vigo County Sheriff’s Office assisted with the fire.

Firefighters remind everyone of the importance of having working smoke alarms in all sections of your home especially sleeping areas.
