Odum/Saylor share unique bond

Day one of the Pacers Rookie/Free Agent camp got underway Tuesday. The former Terre Haute South and Indiana State great Jake Odum is one of 16 players trying to make a name with Indiana on their summer league team.

It wasn’t all that long ago many didn’t know who Jake Odum was, but there was one person all along who said Odum would make it to this point. That person, is Odum’s former high school basketball coach at Terre Haute South Mike Saylor.

During Odum’s senior year Saylor said his point guard would be a 2009 Indiana All-Star, a standout at Indiana State and some day play in the NBA. At the time many questioned Saylor’s comments, but not now. Odum proved Saylor right, he’s done everything Saylor said he would.

When Odum isn’t playing basketball now, he’s trying to return the support to the former Terre Haute South coach who is battling a serious form of cancer. Despite his busy schedule, Jake makes it a point to communicate as often as possible with his ailing mentor.
