TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) – After a concerned neighbors made a report to law enforcement, numerous cats were found inside an abandoned home.

When officials arrived they found 15 cats inside the house on Kennett Drive.

Those same concerned neighbors helped Vigo County Sheriff Deputies catch and put the cats inside cages.

Officials at the scene reported the animals had no food or water.

Vigo County Sheriff Greg Ewing stated the neighbors did the right thing by calling in to report the situation.

“If you’re going to have pets you have to be a responsible pet owner, that’s what it’s all about,” Ewing explained. “You can’t just have hundreds of litters of cats and dogs and whatever and then not take care of them. There are penalties for not taking care of your pets. I don’t know why people don’t just figure that out.”

Those cats are now being nursed back to health at the humane shelter.
