SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP)- AAA Travel projects 41 million Americans will journey 50 miles or more from home during the 2014 Independence Day holiday weekend.

The official travel period began July 2nd and goes through July 6th.

It’s a 1.9 percent increase from the 40.3 million who traveled last year and a nearly 14 percent increase compared to the Memorial Day holiday weekend, nearly 5 million more.

Most will be celebrating with a road trip, with more than eight out of ten people choosing to travel by automobile.
Whether you hit traffic or not, your road trip is probably going to cost you a little more. The current price of a gallon of regular gasoline is about $3.70.. that’s up 20 cents from this time last year.

There is expected to be about 3.1 million air travelers this year, with airfares five percent lower than last year.

AAA says there will be an increase in consumer spending because of employment outlooks, and more people are willing to travel now, and pay of their credit cards later.
