ISU PD names new assistant police chief


TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) – Indiana State University has selected a new assistant police chief.

From the Terre Haute Police Department, Lieutenant Michele Barrett begins her new role at ISU august first.

Starting as a patrol officer in 1993, Barrett has served a variety of roles in the Terre Haute Police Department.

In 2008, Barrett was promoted to Sergeant, and her most recent promotion made her the first woman to achieve that rank in the department’s history.

ISU Police Chief, Joseph Newport, said Barrett has an extensive background that set her apart during the hiring process.

“She had a strong background in criminal investigations and also her familiarity with the local system, the courts, the Prosecutors Office…,” Newport said. “That was very much in her favor during the selection process.” provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
