Annual C.O.P.S. Cycling for Survivors ride kicks off Monday

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The annual C.O.P.S. Cycling for Survivors bike ride kicks off Monday morning at the Law Enforcement and Firefighter Memorial in downtown Indianapolis.

The ride will honor fallen IMPD Officer Rod Bradway who was killed in the line of duty last September, leaving behind a wife and two kids.

This year, 66 cyclists are expected cover nearly 1,000 miles around Indiana.

Riders are active and retired officers, family members and friends.

The ride started in 2001 to raise money and awareness about sacrifices made by Hoosier law enforcement and their families.

Two people credited with its success are now two of the fallen.

Lt. Gary Dudley with Indiana State Police and Retired Chief Gary Martin of the Lake County Police Department were both killed when a car crash happened during the ride in 2006.

Since then, other cyclists determined to keep their memories and the ride going.

To date, riders have raised over $300,000 for the families of law enforcement victims.

The ride ends Saturday, July 26, at Crown Hill Cemetery in the Heroes of Public Safety Section.
