INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Two people, including a child, were taken to the hospital Wednesday afternoon to be checked out after a fire on the east side of Indianapolis.

Firefighters responded to the 2800 block of Elwin Drive shortly after noon on the report of an apartment fire. This is near East 30th Street and North Post Road.

Preliminarily, fire officials say the fire was started by a 5-year-old child playing with a lighter.

Medics took the adult male to Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital for smoke inhalation. The child also suffered from smoke inhalation and was transported to Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health. Both were awake and alert at the scene.

Officials say the child will be counseled by the Indianapolis Fire Department’s Fire Stop Program.

Damages to the apartment are estimated at $300,000.
