Pool filled; swimmers needed at Rainbow Beach in Vincennes

VINCENNES, Ind. (WTHI) – Vincennes Mayor Joe Yochum stood proudly alongside the Rainbow Beach Family Aquatic Center’s pool Thursday as crews tied up some loose ends before the pools Saturday grand opening. The project, which was scheduled to be finished in May, will welcome its first swimmers Saturday.

“It’s been a long process, but I think it’s an outstanding excellent result,” said Mayor Yochum.

The diagrams that outlined the project more than one year ago, couldn’t come close to showing all of the center’s amenities. Only a real life visit would allow spectators to take on the full spectrum of what the center has to offer. The $3.5 million swim sanctuary features two water slides, a diving pool, a children’s splash area, an additional splash area, a new bathhouse, and several umbrella style structures for sun-tanning parents.

“I truly think when the kids get here they’re going to see that the wait is really really worth it.” said Yochum.

City leaders have called Saturday’s grand opening, an event to make history in Vincennes. City leaders and sponsors will hold a ribbon cutting at 10 a.m. and then the first 800 children through the gate will be allowed to swim for free. Any children who arrive after the initial 800 will receive a bracelet to swim for free at a later date. The pool capacity is considered full at 800 swimmers.

“If you’re not one of the lucky ones to get one of those bracelets, we’ll give you a different bracelet that you can come back the next day or later that week and get in for free,” said the Mayor.

The event is sure to be packed. At the center Thursday, kids of all ages stood with arms draped over the pool’s fence to watch crews put the finishing touches on the pool, and spectate as to what they would do first when they got their chance to swim. Mayor Yochum urged parents to bring children ‘very early’ so they had the opportunity to swim on a first-come first-serve basis.

In an earlier interview with News 10, Mayor Yochum explained the pool would stay open later in the season, because of its late opening date.
