BRAZIL, Ind. (WTHI) – An up-tick in ATV crashes has authorities wanting you to be more careful out there.
This, after at least two serious crashes happened this month.
It’s a nice summer day and your family is having a cookout. You’re enjoying yourself and thinking about riding around on the ATV. But did you know that even if you’ve only had one drink at your get-together..it’s illegal to take that ride on your all terrain vehicle?
“We want people to realize that there is there a zero tolerance with alcohol and an ATV. It’s unlike driving on a road when you can have a BAC of .08. On an ATV the tolerance is zero,” stated Indiana Conservation Officer Chris Springstun.
This is something many people may not be aware of. And, the accidents are considerably more regular this summer.
“I have personally worked on more ATV cases this summer than any before…it seems like people get together, have outings, that’s when the ATVs seem to come out and people are already drinking, doing things they probably shouldn’t be doing. When you combine the two, alcohol and the quad, that’s when we have issues and that seems to be the contributing major factors to these accidents,” Springstun added.
He recommended taking the obvious precautions of wearing a helmet and the proper protection. But his biggest piece of advice in hopes of putting a yield on ATV crashes is to not take it to the next level and therefore put yourself at risk for a crash.
