Crop of a different kind in demand

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) – Another kind of farmer in Indiana has one of the hottest crops in the nation right now, and its hops.

Farmers say there’s a shortage of hops nationwide.

That means craft beer makers are struggling to make the beer.

However, in Mishawaka, hops farmers are popping up to help a growing demand.

Farmers there say buyers are booking up well in advance.

“Hops are in such high demand that we have to contract them, I have some hops contracted all the way through 2016,” Scott Ciampa from Evil Czech Brewery said.

According to the National Brewers Association, Indiana had 46 craft breweries across the state in 2011.

That number grew to 63 last year.
