Community responds to CASA’s need for volunteers

VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTHI) – News 10 brought you the story of Court Appointed Special Advocates in Vigo County, also known as CASA, and their need for volunteers.

Today, CASA swore in 23 volunteers. These volunteers will serve as a resource to abused and neglected children in the Vigo County area.

“The community really stepped up,” says Nikki Fuhrmiester, director of CASA in Vigo County, “This is the largest class that we have seen in a long time”.

Fuhrmiester hopes the class of 23 will be able to significantly reduce the number on CASA’s waiting list. So far, more than 100 children are in need of a CASA volunteer.

“With this group, if they take 1 case, that will reduce our wait list by 23 cases,” Fuhrmiester says.

Though the new volunteers will bring down the high number, the fact remains that there are children still waiting. With more children coming in, the need for volunteers continues.

“We are always looking for more CASA volunteers,” Fuhrmiester says, “We will be looking for another huge class in October to help us relieve some more of the wait list”.

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, or would like more information, contact the Vigo County CASA office at (812) 231-5658. You can also visit their website: http://www.vigocountycasa.com.
