TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) – We first told you about a portion of a monument honoring fallen soldiers being stolen from near The Landing in northwest Terre Haute on July 31.
Now, the Terre Haute Police Department has made an arrest and recovered the cannon and cannonballs that were stolen from the monument.
News 10 was able to show you cell phone video of the suspect driving away after the items were stolen. Police stated the story aired generated several tips identifying the suspect.
On Aug. 1 officers received a call that lead them to recover the stolen cannon found near the Cannon Inn.
On Aug. 6 Jack Akers, 28, turned himself into police and turned over the missing cannonballs. He admitted the theft to police stated he had been drinking that day and was depressed over his grandfather’s death.
He was arrested for theft and taken to the Vigo County Jail.
A challenge for the detective in this case is determining the value of what was stolen. That’s necessary thanks to changes in the Indiana criminal code.
“With this, you have to look into how it was manufactured, what it would cost to replace it, and hope that’s going to meet your statutory requirements,” said Assistant Chief Shawn Keen.
In order to file a felony theft charge, the stolen items must total more than $750.
Akers made his first court appearance Thursday. His bond has been set at $5,000 and will be in court again next week.
