Wabash Valley, Ind (WTHI) –  It is back to school season! Some of you are already back in the classroom and, it be a few days or so before the rest start back.

So now is the time for parents and caregivers to figure out how to help children be successful this year. Really, it is not just the little ones going back to school right now so are parents!

Experts say it’s important that parents know what’s going on. Parents need to know their children’s teachers, what their class schedules are like and, depending on their ages what the school and homework consists of.

Support from home plays a huge role in success at school. Studies show that children with parents who are engaged and involved in their school activities do better when it comes to grades, test scores and attendance. They also consistently complete their homework, have better self-esteem, are more motivated in school and are less likely to drop out.

Now is the perfect time to get started. Parents should go and meet the teacher. This time of year, many teachers hold open houses and that’s a great opportunity to talk to the teacher. It’s a great time to find the best way to communicate with the teacher during the school year. Parents can also go online and check out that school calendar. You can consider get involved in the PTO or booster club. A lot of those meetings are just starting back up. Check out the activities planned for the classroom – from parties to field trips – even opportunities to meet your child for lunch or read to his or her class. And, if you don’t have a lot of time, you can still get involved. Paula says one of the best ways to be an involved parent is just to talk to our kids. Parents should ask questions about their days and check out their work. All of this really makes a huge difference.
