Meijer gives tentative opening date

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) – We have a date.

Meijer has given the mayor’s office a tentative opening date of their new store that will locate on Terre Haute’s east side.  Of course, this date is weather permitting.  Still, it gives us an idea of “when” the next major development along State Road 46 should come.

“We knew a next “big thing” was out there,” said Mayor Duke Bennett.  “We’ve been waiting on that for a few years.  And we’ve had some small development, but we knew we would get that “big box” to go out there.”

Well now, that big box retailer is that much closer to coming here.  You can see that a lot of dirt has been moved at what will be Terre Haute’s Meijer store.   Crews have been working on extending a sewer line this way, and they’re preparing the site for construction.  Yes, we will soon see construction at this site in the near future.

Meijer officials have told the Mayor Duke Bennett’s office their store here on State Road 46 could open as soon as June of 2015.  And from there, the mayor says you can expect to see more development on Terre Haute’s east side.

If crews can get a lot of work done before winter, that date will be a reality.  As for future development, even the casual observer can see there’s land to be had here.  And the mayor says a second big box retailer will bring in the traffic needed to entice other retailers and restaurants to locate here.

“I really believe you’re going to see probably over the next 18 to 24 months quite a bit of activity in the state road 46 corridor,” said Mayor Bennett.

The Mayor says it’s too soon to talk about who’s called about state road 46.  He did confirm both his engineering office and the area planning department have received numerous inquiries about State Road 46 properties.  And hopefully after next summer, those calls will turn into announcements.

Mayor Bennett said the next announcements could come next spring. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
