Group in Brazil working for free to keep up businesses in downtown

BRAZIL, Ind. (WTH) – Planting, scraping, and re-painting.

That’s what this group in Brazil is doing for some local businesses and for free.

So how did those businesses get so lucky?

“We just put names in a hat of businesses that wanted to submit their name. Anyone that wanted to and if you still want to you can for the next four businesses for next year,” Lee Lewis said.

“Our theme is history with a vision for Brazil Main Street so we are really trying to accentuate the fact that we still have our downtown, we still have our fabulous building and architecture. So we’re just trying to make them our showcase spots through the city and hopefully we’ll bring more businesses and success to the businesses that have already started,” she said.

Each volunteer has their own specific reasons for getting involved in the revamping.

“I do this because my kids are here and my grandkids. And I want them to have a nice place to grow up,” volunteer Helen Meunier said.

I got involved with Main Street because I own Moore Funeral Home here in town and I want to make a difference in the community for everyone here and I’ve got a child on the way so I wanted to make a different for him as well,” Brandi Tutterow said.

Four businesses and lot of paint.
For the owner of Aunt Z’s antique shop, it was the luck of the draw.

“Well I’m just really grateful. Being a new business, we had a lot of start up costs and not a whole lot of money to put into the building to make it look real nice. So I’m just really excited they were able to do that and they’re really helping out downtown look better and Brazil. We’ve done a few buildings,” Lindsey Mershon said.

The new mural in downtown Brazil is another project put on by Main Street.
