Clean up at Southside Cleaners site in third stage

The clean up project where Southside Cleaners used to be has completed another stage.

Pat Martin at the front of the planning on the city project says some things have been a little hectic but everything is going as smoothly as it can.

“This is what I call the third step stage. The first step stage was last summer when we did the history check on it. Second stage was last December when we did our initial physical investigation. This is a further site investigation right now,” Martin said.

Martin says this drilling stage is to search for contamination. When asked if they found what they were
looking for, the answer was yes.

“We found the contamination still is here at the edge of the property line on the ones that we’ve done so far, we still have one more to do. We’ve done three so far so we’ve found the contamination but it’s a matter of laboratory confirmation on how intense the contamination is,” he said.

Despite a few minor setbacks, Martin says plans are still on track.

There’s no word yet on when the project is heading towards the final stages. But he says they hope to have a report back in about three to four weeks regarding how much of that contamination there is.

“We’re still in what I would call the investigative stage. At the rate we’re going right now depending on what we find and the door to door survey, we should have all of our answers by November or December this year simply because the science takes awhile to do,” Martin said.

Those door to door surveys will provide the important information they need in order to continue moving onward to the next phase.

The surveys will show which residents have well water or city water and any risks for contamination they need to be aware of.
