Old rail lines found beneath US 41

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) – Another construction crew uncovered more rail lines and railroad ties.  But this time it happened on Terre Haute’s busiest street.

Feutz Construction pulled out quite a bit of rail lines underneath what was the median between Ohio and Walnut streets on US 41.  This is part of the Downtown Beautification Project, which is a city-state joint effort.

This median will become a landscaping bed, which means crews had to dig a little deeper. They’ll fill with clean dirt and proceed with the project. The city engineer said a trolley ran on these rail lines up until the 1940’s.

“They moved 41 from 7th street to 3rd street back in the 60’s,” said City Engineer Chuck Ennis.  “So we figured that the rail and trolley lines had been removed long ago.”

This discovery delay will not delay this project.  The project will be finished by November.
