TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) – Vigo County Sheriff Greg Ewing confirms to News 10 he sent 30 of his inmates to Noble County, which is about three-and-a-half hours from Terre Haute.
A published report indicated that the Noble County Sheriff would only accept male inmates who were in good health and were not sex offenders. Ewing said he sent inmates who were not due in court for some time and could not make bail.
Vigo County taxpayers will pay Noble County $35 per day per inmate. The published report also said Noble County plans to use the money from Vigo County to replace aging cameras at the jail.
Ewing hopes to bring Vigo inmates closer to home when either room opens up at his jail or at a jail in a county closer to Terre Haute. He’s not sure if or when that will happen.
