(WTHI) – A message for college students and their families.
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid or FAFSA is available this weekend.
That is three months earlier than in previous years.
FAFSA is used to determine how much money students and their families will get for college.
The release date was moved up to make sure recent tax information was readily available.
A recent analysis from NerdWallet found that as much as $2.7 billion dollars in free federal grant money went unclaimed last year.
That’s mainly because of incomplete or un-submitted FAFSA forms.
Many don’t bother to complete the FAFSA because they think they earn too much.
But, the Department of Education notes that aid is not based on a simple income line in the sand, it depends on your individual circumstances.
