VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTHI) – Indiana State Police reports a sleepy driver was the cause of an accident on Interstate 70 in Vigo County on Wednesday morning.

The accident was just before 9 a.m. in the westbound lanes of I-70 near the 9.5 mile marker.

A 2007 Chevrolet Malibu was traveling west when the driver reported he fell asleep. That is when the vehicle drifted off the south edge of the road causing the driver to over correct.  The vehicle veered across the westbound lanes and into a wooded area on the north side of the interstate.

The driver was not injured, but a passenger in the car was taken to Regional Hospital for arm and back injuries.

ISP reported that seat belts and air bags most likely reduced injuries in this accident.
