TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) – Talking to inmates while in court in Vigo County is not allowed. That didn’t stop Tasha Burchett from trying to talk to her boyfriend, Jack Akers, Jr. He’s facing robbery with a deadly weapon charges.
The Vigo County Sheriff’s Office accuses Akers of pulling a knife on a Wal-Mart loss prevention officer, who confronted Akers for shoplifting. As Akers pulled the knife, deputies say Burchett fled the scene.
Judge David Bolk ordered Burchett and Akers to stop speaking during court proceedings Thursday morning. Burchett responded with foul language and obscene gestures. Judge Bolk immediately held a hearing, finding Burchett in contempt of court. He sentenced her to 10 days in jail. Court staff said Burchett apologized to Judge Bolk during the hearing.
Meanwhile, Akers will be back in court on the 12th. Unless the judge changes his mind, Burchett will not be in the audience this time.
