Charges filed after worker hit in construction zone in Greene County

GREENE COUNTY, Ind. (WTHI) – Officials report charges have been filed after a worker was hit in a construction zone and the driver failed to stop.

The accident was on Oct. 18 around 8 a.m. on State Road 54 in front of White River Valley High School.

Officials report the worker had to be taken to Greene County General Hospital and was later airlifted to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. The worker sustained injuries including a broken arm, broken ribs, and contusions, abrasions,and lacerations about the head and shoulders. It was determined at the hospital that the worker also suffered a ruptured spleen.

Officers were able to track down the driver of the vehicle involved in the accident and she was identified as Virginia Spencer who was taken in for questioning.

Spencer told police that she had dropped off her son for work and then was traveling on SR 54 when she said she hit an orange construction barrel. She stated she stopped a few minutes later to examine the damage to her vehicle but then continued on to work.

Officials report photographs taken at the scene of the accident showed there were no orange barrels present on the day of the accident.

Spencer is facing charges of failure to stop after accident, failure to stop after accident resulting In bodily injury and failure to stop after accident resulting In serious bodily injury.
