VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTHI) – With cellphones in the hands of most drivers, distracted driving has become a problem.
A local trial lawyer is working to combat this issue on the road.
Steve Williams with Williams Law Firm in Terre Haute gives presentations about the dangers of distracted driving. He says some of the worst accidents happen because of talking on the phone or texting.
More than 5,000 people die a year in accidents where the driver is on their phone.
Thursday morning Williams informed young drivers that their actions on the road can put themselves and others in danger. According to his presentation, nearly half of teen drivers say they text while driving.
Adults reported an even higher percentage of texting while driving. Statistics show that texting is actually twice as dangerous as drunk driving.
“We all know and appreciate the risks of drunk driving and somehow we think distracted driving with a cell phone is less dangerous but in fact it’s more dangerous,” Williams said.
On Friday, students at South Vigo High School will attend this same presentation all in hopes to reduce this trend and make roads safer for everyone.
