Giving the gift of socks this holiday season

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) – A barrel sits outside Kimberly Burger’s house in Terre Haute. The purpose? Collecting socks!

It’s an item Burger doesn’t think people realize others need.

“I just think you don’t think about that,” Burger said. “And with this time of year being cold and damp again I just think that that’s something and homeless or low income even, it’s like a luxury to them having brand new socks and we take that for granted.”

That’s why Burger created the Socks for Shelter collection drive.

It’s simply that.

Burger wanting to collect as many socks as she can to donate to local shelters.

“Nobody likes socks for Christmas,” Burger said. “It’s kind of like a joke. You know, ooh I got a pair of socks for Christmas. But you know, some people really do appreciate that and so that’s why I created that.”

Burger took her sock drive to Facebook, letting people know what’s happening.

She says she’s a little overwhelmed by all of the support she’s received for her effort.

“It started out with like 90 invites to some friends, it was private,” Burger said. “And they shared it. And I suggested that if they wanted to share it, go ahead. I’m at 457 and growing probably since I haven’t checked my phone, so, more than what I expected.”

Burger doesn’t have a goal in mind.

She just hopes to collect enough socks to give to at least a couple local groups. Overall, she wants this sock drive to remind people of the needs our community has.

“Just to make people aware that there’s things that they can do that aren’t really out there that they can start their own selves and do something to help somebody else in need this time of year,” Burger said.

If you’d like to donate, you can drop off new socks to the barrel at 2619 Park Street in Terre Haute.
